The first batch of elevators to be installed in a project to help old residential communities in the Baiyun district of Guiyang -- capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province -- will reportedly soon start operating.

The addition of the elevators to the existing residential buildings is regarded as being an important social project in the district that will help transform old communities, based on the needs of the residents.

The first residential community in Baiyun district to benefit from the project is the Yanjin Garden residential community in the Quanhu sub-district.

The accommodation block there was built in 1997 and has four buildings with nine units, all without the services of elevators.

It is home to many elderly residents, making it time-consuming and difficult for them to climb the stairs.

After an assessment, seven units of the residential community qualified for the installation of the elevators.

Work on their installation began last year and has now been completed, with the project now awaiting official acceptance and delivery.

When elevators start operating, the running costs will be shared among the residents, and maintenance and repair fees are expected to be covered by the incomes from elevator advertisements and government subsidies, among other things.
