Baiyun district in Guiyang, the capital city of Southwest China's Guizhou province, will take measures to safeguard its ecological environment, according to information from the second session of the 12th Baiyun District People's Congress that concluded on Feb 17.

Plans are for Baiyun to maintain a "good" or "excellent" air quality rating for more than 95 percent of the year. In so doing, Baiyun will strengthen the coordinated prevention and control of air pollution, while also strengthening the prevention and control of dust.

To fight against water pollution, Baiyun will continue to comprehensively manage the Maijia River, Dalu River, Daniwo River and other river basins. It will also dynamically clear all black and odorous water bodies within the district.

It aims to ensure that the water quality of the provincial-level assessment sections of surface water and the water quality of centralized drinking water sources in Baiyun meet 100 percent of the national standards.

To strengthen earth pollution prevention and control, Baiyun is planning to promote the reduction of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, while strictly controlling various storage yards.

The safe disposal rate of hazardous waste in Baiyun is also expected to reach 100 percent this year.

In terms of ecological protection and restoration, the district will severely crack down on illegal activities such as private digging and illegal mining, deforestation, and illegal occupation of forest land this year. It will strengthen ecological protection in Changpoling National Forest Park, Duxi Forest Farm, and Yunwu Mountain.

Baiyun is also planning to add green pockets throughout the year, which will eventually amount to a 50,000-square-meter area. This will ensure that the forest coverage rate in the district exceeds 46 percent, and the forest management and protection rate reaches 100 percent.

Moreover, Baiyun will focus on promoting green and low-carbon development. It will accelerate the utilization of green production methods, and utilize new energy in intelligent manufacturing, prefabricated buildings and other industries.

Other strategies include developing a forestry-derived economy, promoting the utilization of clean energy, and accelerating the establishment of a carbon emission trading center.

It should be noted that in 2023, Baiyun also plans to build 85 charging piles and establish the Shawen domestic waste sorting center.
